Reed Wedding Band Ancient Egypt

If there is one constant in the rich tradition and styles of wedding bands throughout the course of history, it is that they have constantly changed. From the earliest rings made by the ancient Egyptians of rushes and reeds, twisted into circles to symbolize eternity, to the iron betrothal rings of the ancient Romans, to the golden symbols of unity favored by the 13th century Christians; rings have hopped from fingers, hands, and materials too many times to count. All the more reason for today’s brides and grooms to forgo what may seem traditionally mandated and instead make a choice based on what feels right for them.

Wedding bands are much more than jewelry; they represent the exchange of a promise made by two people. There is only one guideline when choosing your own bands, and that is to choose what is right for you. There are no hard and fast rules on wearing both the engagement ring and wedding band on the same finger, and contrary to superstition there is no “Vena Amoris,” or vein of love, traveling directly from the third finger of your left hand to your heart – though it is a sweet thought. And although the Irish felt it  be bad luck for a couple to be married with anything but gold – so much so that gold rings were provided by the church to those who could not afford one (and immediately reclaimed afterwards) – the truth is, silver, onyx, amethyst, ivory, and even leather have all had their cultural moments.
